I am happy to wait for the right person, just as I hope you are happy to wait for the right practice.
When I began in general practice, I started out working for other doctors and learning from them. I always knew one day I would have my own practice where I could apply my own ideas and beliefs. After 25 years I am very fortunate to have a loyal following of wonderful patients who appreciate the effort I make for their care. They even pay their bills! (which is a novel idea in general practice).
It did not happen overnight. When I started there were often days when I only saw one or two patients. I must confess I had some doubts and wondered occasionally if my appointment book would ever be full. Still, I had plenty of time to plan my life and set up my practice exactly how I liked. I gave 100% service and made myself available day and night. Surely enough my practice grew. At one point we had 6 GP's working here. Currently we have 4.
I would like to think there is another young doctor out there, perhaps a little like I was: Idealistic. Enthusiastic. Ambitious. There is a great opportunity here for such a doctor.
I love my job and plan to keep working for some time yet. I would like to gradually ease up over the next five to ten years. By then I would hope to hand over control and ownership of the practice. I would like to see an apprentice grow to become the master. I can imagine eventually working part-time, as the assistant to my younger colleague.
I am entirely open to the matters of pay and conditions. This should be resolved along mutually agreeable lines by sensible negotiation. I can imagine my junior partner gradually acquiring increasing equity in the practice with each year worked here, until ownership changes hands.
Mosman is a very special place to live and work. People in this suburb say "hello" in the street. The kids go to the local schools. The city is 10 minutes drive away and the harbour and beaches are on our doorstep. We have cinemas, restaurants parks and sporting grounds. I can't imagine a better place to be.
Our success shows there is a future for the smaller, cottage practice. I believe this is where the family doctor belongs and not in a big impersonal supermarket. When we own things,we look after them better. I believe this is true of medical practice, just like everything else. I believe all doctors do a better job and reap greater professional rwards when they own "the shop".
